Finding the Pretty in Life’s Messiness
Let me ask you a question- how does one go about finding the pretty in life’s messiness? You see I was fancy once. And by fancy I mean, was in the company of fancy people. I was a “handler” for the CFO of an $83.2 billion company. You know, the person that stands next to someone of importance at public events and whispers things like, “That’s so-and-so. You know her. She just had a baby.”
Yes, Bauer. Momma was kind of a big deal.
But seriously, before my latest career move to mommy, I had the opportunity to write speeches and travel around town with Home Depot’s CFO. When I was with her, I was a sponge. How many people get the opportunity to learn from such a brilliant leader?
I wish I could say that my time with her led me to make lucrative stock market decisions – but alas, it isn’t so. However, her simple response to the regular time management question stuck with me: Stop doing things that aren’t important. Like making the bed.
The dog is doing the bathroom dance by the door, the baby is crying and the husband might literally still be under the covers – and I have to fight the urge to make the bed the second I wake up. I like pretty things – perfectly arranged where they belong.
A baby will make you sing a different tune. And I’m learning that sometimes, pretty things come out of the messy, unmade beds.
Learning from one of the world’s greatest business minds is something I miss regularly. But it’s pretty amazing the things a 5-month-old will teach you if you’re open to it. If leaving the bed unmade means more time to sing songs and play peek-a-boo…then sign me up. Sometimes you just have to sit back and learn that finding the pretty in life’s messiness is worth so much more. Check out the full Motherhood section before you go.
