Shared Room for Girls
Funny story. I re-arranged the girls’ shared room…again. I know what you’re thinking. And yes, I’m absolutely crazy. This room is long, and has awkward bathroom and closet door placement and quite frankly: has given me hell.
Every time my mom visits we wait until there’s a golf tournament or football game on to distract the men long enough and sneak up to the room and move beds, and ponder. Then move beds again, and ponder. The girls are used to it by now – thank God. They think it’s a fun little game. But you guys! We’re done pondering! We got it! BY GEORGE WE’VE GOT IT. Even my friend and photographer, Alea, walked in this time and said: “Oh yes, this is it.” And the pictures are proof!
Take a peek and I’ll highlight some of my favorites in the room! Everything will be linked below…but feel free to reach out with questions!
I absolutely adore our Jenny Lind twin beds and highly recommend them to anyone looking for their first “big kid” bed. The style is classic and I know these will stay in the family for years to come. Both girls sleep with toddler rails (not pictured) that you can purchase with the beds.
I opted for these Serena + Lily dipped stools in place of traditional nightstands. The charm of two of these beds side-by-side is best seen when close together, and the stools were the perfect fit!
In earlier versions of this room I kept the wall space between the windows bare. And then I fell in love with this photo of the girls in their matching jackets and tippy toes and knew it needed a permanent home. Custom framing can be expensive, but I’ve started going to Custom Picture Frames for all my framing needs and they have beautiful options for a fraction of the price. You can use the code “MEGBASINGER20” for 20 percent off your order anytime.
The Caitlin Wilson wallpaper was the first decision I made for the room when we moved into the house two years ago. I wanted something feminine, but modern. Happy to report that I love it just as much today – as I did 24 months ago.
Ok, as I say to my girls: put your listening ears on. My biggest tip when designing a nursery or kid space is to let them be kids! With the popularity of HGTV and Pinterest, I see too many folks pushing their “adult” style into their children’s spaces and completely losing the “fun” factor. Now stay with me…I’m not saying a child’s room can’t be beautiful. And I don’t support the “it’s a kid space, they don’t care what it looks like just throw some bright crap in there” mentality. Our girls love beautiful, well-planned spaces. They know it’s special and they genuinely get excited about it. They also treat their things with more love and respect…often cleaning up after themselves without being asked, because they’ve seen the hard work that’s gone into the room.
The bones of this room match the overall feel of our home, but the artwork is age-appropriate. Which means it can easily be switched out with time and maturity. Bauer selected each and every animal from Minted’s collection for these walls and I couldn’t love them more! Minted quality is incredible – from the actual artwork itself, to the framing.
The bedding is Restoration Hardware Baby + Child and I’m afraid is no longer available. I’ve included some similar options below. And going back to making this a room for THEM, not for me – Not pictured here, but the girls both wrap themselves in Disney Princess Sheets every night.
This room would have been easy peasy if the space you’ve seen thus far was all there was to it. But, remember how I said this room is long and awkward? I needed the perfect dresser and bench to balance it out.
I searched for this dresser longer than any other piece of furniture in our home. I needed the perfect color wood – not too red. And just the right amount of a modern. The icing on the cake is this beautiful abstract print from my friend and local Artist Hannah Crosby. That, paired next to our The Type Set Co. board adds playful personality to the space. If you aren’t familiar with their boards, you must check them out! They have colorful options and you can add your own special flare with chalk!
The girls’ wooden name signs are from House of Belonging. Sadly, they no longer makes these signs – but I’ve seen some similar options on Etsy! The bench and decorative pillow are from Sugarboo and Co.
We love this room so much. Now who needs all the tips for transitioning your youngest into the “big girl” room? I’ll let you know how that goes as we tackle this week!
